Brelby Instructor: John Perovich


Brelby Background: John first became involved with Brelby when he served as the dramaturg for Oh, the Humanity! John’s play Poseidon’s Regret was a part of Brelby’s 2015 studio series. His play missing grace is the first installment of Brelby’s 2016 Studio Series. John performed in the MisCast Concert in August 2015 and as Gonzalo/Iris in The Tempest in October 2015. John has been a teaching artist for Brelby since spring 2015.

Instructor Bio: 

John is an educator and theatre maker currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Dramatic Writing at Arizona State University. His play shallow grave received a workshop production as part of ASU’s Main Stage Studio Series in October 2014. Upcoming 2016 premieres include missing grace with Brelby Theatre Company and on display with ASU. John’s play, now & then, was recently accepted at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and will be presented in February 2016 in Honolulu, HI.
In addition to playwriting, John has also served as a teaching artist for Wingspan Arts in New York City, instructing musical theatre courses with K-5 students. John has also served as a teaching artist and site coordinator for Learning Stages in southern New Jersey. John created ClassACT with Learning Stages, an after school arts program for K-8 students that earned a Promising Practices award from NJ After 3 for exceptional arts programming. All of John’s teaching artist experience focuses on developing a broad range of theatre skills with young people while creating an original performance for the community.
John currently serves as a teaching assistant in the School of Film, Dance, and Theatre at ASU, instructing various courses, including playwriting and screenwriting. He was previously an instructor at Stockton University in Galloway, NJ, teaching courses in playwriting, dramatic literature, and acting.
John holds a Master of Arts from New York University in Educational Theatre for Colleges and Communities and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications: Radio/Television/Film from Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild of America, Inc.

Write Club (ages 17 and up)
The 4th Saturday of Every Month, 12PM to 3PM
 
Write Club is a a free and open group for playwrights looking for a supportive community to share the ongoing development of their work. Through monthly meetings, participants can expect to have their work read aloud and receive constructive feedback. Each meeting will feature a brief topic and discussion lead by the teaching artist related to new play development. The teaching artist will also keep members informed of ongoing playwriting competitions and festivals. Write Club is primarily for writers, but is open to anyone interested in learning more about playwriting and new play development. Email inquiries to john@brelby.com.
