Our Brelby Story: Brian & Shelby Maticic (Part III)

Part III (The one where we answer questions from Brelby Artists) We decided to field questions from our pool of artists for this final blog entry, because we think that they’re just the greatest. Thanks for following along with our 30 days of artist stories. Enjoy our Q&A!   Best part of being a husband/wife duo? Brian: There is nothing  like always having someone to share your struggles with and support each other when you are facing a new challenge. Being able to see eachother everyday and work towards a shared passion keeps the relationship fresh and exciting. Shelby: Having a partner who understands the tough time commitments of theatre…

Our Brelby Story: Brian & Shelby (Part II)

Part II – Overcoming Obstacles or Getting by With a Little Help from our Friends Our first season of producing was a whirlwind summer. We mounted an original murder mystery dinner theatre in Flagstaff, and then proceeded to travel with a ragtag band of NAU alumns and students from Flagstaff to Kingman to Cave Creek. We mounted a full scale production of Brian’s Playing Games, and a children friendly fairy tale mashup. We rehearsed in parking lots. We constructed far too many costume pieces with hot glue guns. We dove in headfirst, and we took the plunge. Did we turn a profit? Not even close. Did we learn? Yes. Did…

Our Brelby Story: Brian & Shelby Maticic (Part I)

Part I – Beginnings Our Brelby story begins exactly where you’d hope…in a theatre. Brian and Shelby met in passing when he visited NAU to audition for scholarships during his senior year of high school, but it was backstage where their friendship began. Brian and Shelby met working on the crew of NAU’s 2004 production of Cinderella, where Shelby was the Assistant Stage Manager, and Brian was on the running crew. (Insert obligatory joke here about Shelby continuing to tell him what to do for the rest of their lives…or about meeting her Prince Charming during a production of Cinderella). A friendship grew over a shared interest in Neil Simon,…

My Brelby Story: Zachary Arnold & Erin Coen

Two best friends starting a new journey together. We know, that sounds totally cliché, but it’s exactly how we ended up at Brelby. Being the only students in our high school theatre department that are branching out before graduation, we certainly raised a few questions. We come from a certain theatre background that is either one way or no way. When we were ready to give up on our theatre careers, DJ Hall, Kristiana Faddoul, and Jamie Terran introduced us to this amazing theatre. At first we were completely terrified of meeting Shelby and Brian, but we knew this was what we wanted, this was where we wanted to be.…

    My Brelby Story: Carolyn McBurney

My Brelby connection started 2 years ago (I can’t believe it’s been that long…) when I auditioned for The Importance of Being Earnest– a play I had done in college and an all-time fave.  Well, college was many moons ago and now here I was- auditioning to play the mother of the role I had back then. I got the role of Lady Bracknell- one of those roles that actresses give their eye teeth to play- and I was in!–only I was scared to death.  I had been away from acting for so long, having only one other role in  twenty years and I was in this wonderful little black…

    My Brelby Story: Niki DeShazo

Decisions             I can’t tell you how many times I have been told: “Don’t over- think it, Niki.” I remember when I first began acting. I had grown up set on being a doctor. Everything was decided. But I loved story- telling and the idea of jumping into someone else’s life. In elementary school, I started to realized I didn’t want to be a doctor, but I couldn’t admit it yet. My first big dream was to be a singer. So, I got a karaoke machine, sang every day, and tried to start my own band. Ah, little Niki….. So cute. Well, the first time I sang for anyone, I…

    My Brelby Story: Melissa Kamel

The oh-so Wonderful Life of Melissa Preface: Melissa’s Brelby story is not so much comprised of events but more so the people brought into her life through this company. While she is in the spotlight of her own life, it is certainly not a one man show. List of Characters Melissa Kamel: 20 year old company member at Brelby Theatre Company. My Brelby Story: Fernando Perez

“Because Shelby was crazy enough to give me a role.” These words have echoed throughout my head ever since I first walked through the door of Brelby to see my first production there, Oh, the Humanity! Now, before I continue any further, allow me to introduce myself by painting you a picture. There I am, sitting on a stool, the smoke of a cigar slowly billowing from the front end. The red glow of the embers is the only light source as the shadows ever so slightly play across the face that is serious with eyes that are looking out into the distance longingly. Maybe this situation is not the…

    My Brelby Story: Mia Passarella

My Brelby story begins outside of a rehearsal room. As many theater stories do. Back in February I began rehearsals for a show at ASU called Nation. After recently quitting my job and with the imminent threat of graduation looming over my head, it meant that I would be focusing all of my energies into it in order to keep my mind off of the aneurism that was bound to happen while I was trying to figure out what the heck to do with my life. The clock was ticking and I wouldn’t be able to hide behind school anymore. No school, no work, and no more show after this…

    My Brelby Story: David Magadan

How’s it going, my name is David Magadan and I am a Brelby company member, Improv instructor, and one of our resident smart mouths. I have been with Brelby for about a year now and it has been eventful to say the least. My Brelby story begins where a sad story ends. In brief I was betrayed by people who I thought would love me, support me, and with whom I could do no wrong. This was not the case and for the very first time in my life I was defeated. I believed art and artists alike to be a selfish medium that I no longer loved. I…
