Leon Tolchinsky is ecstatic. He’s landed a terrific teaching job in an idyllic Russian hamlet. When he arrives he finds people sweeping dust from the stoops back into their houses and people milking upside down to get more cream. The town has been cursed with Chronic Stupidity for 200 years and Leon’s job is to break the curse. He soon discovers that if he stays over 24 hours and fails to break the curse, he too becomes stupid. But, he has fallen in love with his pupil, a beautiful girl who is also afflicted. Will he unravel the curse before time runs out?
Meet CODY GOULDER playing the role of Dr. Nikolai Zubritsky
What is your favorite part of the story of “Fools”?
It’s about the importance of education as it means to one’s self confidence. In my opinion, many characters living in Kulyenchikov aren’t stupid but insecure or just make assumptions that they “can’t.” But, if you believe and put the effort into that belief, then you can do anything. It’s about opening your mind, which means educating yourself. It’s a show that yes features a teacher but is also shows how his belief and confidence in inspiring others helps them put forth the effort in achieving their goals.
What has been the best part of the rehearsal process so far?
Best part of the rehearsal process so far has been the chemistry. Each person has taken to their role like a duck to water. It’s such a warm, wonderful place that does need to say “we have a good show.” we just do.
What do you love most about your character?
I love Nikolai so much because he is a typical nervous dad. He wants Sophia to be so happy and do so much better than he has allowed himself to have. Each teacher who has shown up has the potential to help her. The only thing really holding him back is his fear of making the wrong decision. His inactivity hurts and, when he believes he has hurt his daughter, it becomes the most unkindest cut of all. Nikolai lives with such a big heart that he’s nervous to let loose for fear of making a mistake. The one certainty he has is Sophia and the potential she possesses. And, isn’t that the sign of any good father? Want your children to excel beyond where you’ve introduced them?
Why should people come see this show?
People should come see Fools because this is the best cast in the Greater Phoenix area, both kids and adults will get a kick out of it, and its going to surpass you in ways you never saw coming. Oh… and its really funny. I mean, REALLY funny.
