It’s that time of year again!! That time when we give the blog over to our immensely talented artists and let them share their thoughts about art, life and more. The November Blogathon has become a Brelby tradition here at the Brelby Buzz, and this year we’re wrapping up Season Nine with our favorite Brelby Moments. For the next 30 days, our artists will discuss their favorite Brelby Moments from Season Nine and how that has impacted them and the way they approach their art.
First up, Brelby Theatre Company Member, John Perovich who wrote this season’s unexpected and is working on Season Ten’s production, Spy Love You.
My Brelby Moment
By John Perovich
This season was filled with many great moments. Personally, one of the greatest moments this season was working on Peter and the Starcatcher. There are many reasons why the play has left an impact on me. The director, script, cast, music… I learned a great deal working with the entire team on the show.
The play… it’s not an easy script. It was very challenging to work on the play and it was very rewarding to feel everything coming together. I haven’t been pushed in that way as a performer for a long time, and the challenge was fantastic. The play asks for actors to be consistently engaged, all of us, the entire time on stage. Always being in the moment… I could do the play over and over again—it was such a rush.
Peter and the Starcatcher has literally changed the way I think about art. I enjoyed the play’s use of ensemble and I am currently allowing the play to inspire me as I work on Spy Love You—which will premier in 2018 at Brelby.
I’m using Peter and the Starcatcher’s ensemble approach to theatre making. As an actor, it’s a lot of fun to work in a tight-knit ensemble! As a writer, it’s been exciting—so many possibilities! I’m really excited to share Spy Love You with our cast, creative team, and audience. The story is about spies—of course—but the style of the piece…that will be heavily influenced by my love for participating in Peter and the Starcatcher at Brelby.
Thank you John for sharing your Brelby Moment with us! Be sure to join us tomorrow for more Blogathon fun!
