For the rest of November, every day, the Brelby Buzz will be bringing you the second installment of the November Blogathon. Thirty days, thirty original posts from Brelby’s Company Members and collaborative artists of Season 8. Each post will revolve around a word that artist considers to be integral to what art and Brelby means to them.
By Brian Maticic
Brelby is a lot of things for me. It’s my place of business, my passion, the place I want to be. It represents my dreams, and is full of the most incredible people in the world. But what it really comes down to for me is, Brelby is my home. You can make the joke that I practically live there, and you wouldn’t necessarily be wrong, but that misses the point.
When Shelby and I started Brelby we didn’t envision a place, or a thing, we envisioned an idea. Something that would speak to artists and audiences, provide them opportunities and inspire them to grow to their best, to be compassionate, bold, caring, and engaged with the arts. This idea has blossomed into something beautiful, a community that support and encourage each other, and always push each other to improve and be open to new ideas. Beyond that it has created a family. Artists come and go as they pursue other opportunities or move to different stages in their lives, but are always welcome to come home when they need encouragement, friendship, or the opportunity to again imagine, create, and inspire in our studio.
I have been incredibly blessed with the opportunities I’ve had with Brelby. I’ve had the opportunity to direct some of the most talented individuals I’ve ever met in a wide variety of shows I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to direct if not for Brelby. I’ve been able to perform in numerous plays and parts, and have had many of my original scripts brought to life inside these walls. I hope all of you will join us this December for my script “Non-fat Soy Peppermint Mocha Latte… With Sprinkles” and again in January for the world premiere of my new script I have been working on for four years “Windfall”.
I have enjoyed every project and opportunity I’ve had with Brelby, but the most rewarding thing for me is the opportunities we are able to offer others. Every time an artist achieves a new level, or learns a new skill, or finds a new passion in a field they’ve never tried before or gets an opportunity they didn’t think they would ever have my heart is full. These incredibly talented caring people we’ve surrounded ourselves with have become endlessly important to me. They are the family I’ve built and chosen, and this theatre is the home that brings them together. Home is where the heart is, and my heart is with these artists, and this community, and the art we create together. Brelby is where I am happy, where I am rejuvenated, where I belong. Brelby is home. So to everyone who has ever worked with us or supported our art, thank you. And to all of the artists who will work with us in the future, and the patrons who haven’t found their way to us yet, I look forward to welcoming you into our home.
