Now & Then: Carolyn McBurney

Then & Now(1)

carolynFor a really long time, I have filled my life with “things that need to get done”. I’m a do-er. I’m a mom, a wife, a daughter.  I go to work, I serve on a bunch of non-profit boards- I stay busy. I’ve been DOING for a long time and somewhere along the line I fell into the mundane.  I don’t mean that in a bad way.  I have some great friends, I have a nice husband, a fascinating daughter and a cute dog- all of whom are very special to me- I personify #soblessed.  But I didn’t spend a lot of time reflecting upon my life. I was mostly filling time with “stuff”.
I didn’t think about my life as  being anything extraordinary. That is, until I fell in with the Brelby crowd and I found myself looking at who I am, what the world means to me and my place in it.  While preparing for a theatre role automatically calls for introspection, this group of people genuinely wanted to know these things about me and each other and intentionally celebrated these discoveries.
It has been fun looking back on some of my life experiences through the lens of my new friends at Brelby. Throughout my life I have had some really great experiences- visited some really amazing places all over the world. I’ve done some really wacky things- had some frightening moments and met some really interesting people. I shared many a story in our “sharing time” at rehearsals.  Then, at the end of the year last year, I was awarded “The Most Interesting Person in the World” award at Brelby’s end of the year celebration, I was completely blown away. I’m reminded not to take my life for granted-  that I have life experiences to share and there are people who are willing to listen.
Looking back, I’ve been lucky enough to have received some pretty special recognitions, but I can honestly say that this is my most prized award. Because it’s full of love and laughs and very special moments that I will hold close to my heart forever.
