Who We Are

Brian Maticic (Executive Director)

Brian grew up in Kingman, AZ.  He not only developed a passion for theatre at a young age, but a knack for the administrative side of things, as he founded his first theatre company at the age of 16.

Brian attended Northern Arizona University, where he pursued a degree in Theatre Performance. He became incredibly involved in reestablishing Arizona Playmakers, an organization that was dedicated to supporting and producing pieces from young playwrights.

Brian had the privilege of playing many roles upon the NAU stage, including “Fabian” in Twelfth Night, “Lane” in The Importance of Being Earnest, “Man #3” in The Good Doctor, “Buddy” in The Diviners, “Grumio” in The Taming of the Shrew, and “Rosencrans” in Rosencrans and Guildenstern are Dead.

Brian, besides serving as Executive Director, has also been incredibly active in the Brelby Theatre Company from a variety of angles. In the 2009 season, he played the roles of “Ben Pickens” in Open Mike Murders (which he co-wrote and directed) and “Melba” in Happily Ever, Once Upon. In addition, he directed the world premiere of his original play, Playing Games. In the 2010 season, Brian kept incredibly busy. He was featured in The Complete Works of William Shakespeare: Abridged, played “Touchstone” in As You Like It (which he co-directed) and tackled the lead role of “Darren” in Non-Fat Soy Mocha Latte…With Sprinkles (which he directed, wrote and handled scenic and lighting design).

Shelby Maticic (Artistic Director)

Shelby grew up in the North Phoenix area where she developed her initial interest in theatre at a young age, writing plays and auditioning for school shows.

As she realized that she wanted to dedicate her life to pursuing this art form, she found her way to Northern Arizona University, where she pursued a degree in Theatre Performance. She had the privilege of taking on such roles as Elizabeth in Defying Gravity, Sister Mary Agnes in Catholic School Girls, Anabel Lee in Still Life With Iris, Feste in Twelfth Night, and supporting roles in 1940s Radio Hour and The Diviners.
She discovered that her true passion was in directing, and had the privilege of serving as a director/choreographer for dozens of student pieces, as well as A Little Night Music with the NAU Opera Department and a second stage production of You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown.
Shelby is a proud alumni of the Beta Nu cast of Alpha Psi Omega, where she served one term as secretary and two as cast president. She is a co-founder of NAU’s Educational Theatre Company (ETC), of which she was the first president. She also made her mark in the department by helping to plan several performance events, some of which have become tradition, including an annual Miscast Concert and an annual evening of performances to benefit Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS. She also participated in USITT, Arizona Playmakers and NAUghty Bits (NAU’s premiere improv troupe) while studying in Flagstaff. She was incredibly proud to accept the honor of Outstanding Senior for the NAU Theatre Department as a culmination of her hard work.
She met her husband, Brian, backstage during a performance of Cinderella at NAU, and the two went on to found the Brelby Theatre Company. Through Brelby she has directed Happily Ever Once Upon and The Complete Works of Shakespeare: Abridged. She has taken on roles such as Mel in Playing Games, Goldilocks in Happily Ever Once Upon, Trish in Non-Fat Soy Peppermint Mocha Latte…With Sprinkles and Pamela in Open Mike Murders. She looks forward to taking on the role of director once again in the 2011 season.
